    Decking Coating and Maintenance

    UNCOATED THERMO TIMBER

Thermally modified timber (TMT) is highly durable and can last for years without a protective coating. However, it naturally changes colour when exposed to weather and UV rays, shifting from a deep brown to organic grey. This transformation occurs gradually and varies depending on the environment and architecture, ranging from light silver to almost black. Over time, the surface may become rougher and develop small cracks, making it more susceptible to surface mould.

    RECOMMENDATIONS FOR DECKING COATING

As there is no resin or pitch left in thermo timber, all coating materials will adhere better to its clean, resin-free surface. Any wood decking finish can be used, except linseed oil. Semi-transparent decking oil with pigment protects the TMT from UV radiation and provides the desired colour.

The most used decking oil provides an original caramel colour or a shade close to that of naturally weathered TMT. This is a very practical solution, as the oil pigments wear off fairly quickly and the exposed wood begins to grey. However, the overall appearance of grey-coated thermo timber remains aesthetically pleasing.

It is important to apply the coating oil in a thin layer to allow the wood to ‘breathe’ and enable water to evaporate. Do not coat the decking in direct sunlight or in the rain. Depending on the type of oil used, the freshly coated decking should be protected from precipitation for at least 24 hours.

Brolis Timber thermo timber decking boards can be industrially coated to ensure a high-quality, technologically correct final result. During production, we use the semi-transparent Tikkurila Pinja W-Oil oil.

! The maintenance recommendations below are specifically intended for thermo timber decking coated with this product.

    RECOMMENDATIONS FOR DECKING MAINTENANCE

    UNCOATED:

Regularly sweep and wash the decking to prevent dirt build-up and the growth of surface mould or moss.

    COATED:

To maintain the colour, re-oil the decking annually or as needed. Grey-toned decking usually has a more uniform appearance, making this shade the most practical choice. Before re-oiling, wash the decking with an alkaline cleaner designed for outdoor wood and rinse with water*.

*Thermo timber products should not be cleaned with high-pressure washers, as this can damage the surface and cause splintering.
