UNCOATED THERMOWOOD

Thermowood is highly durable and can last for years without a protective coating. However, it naturally changes colour when exposed to weather and UV rays, shifting from a deep brown to organic grey. This transformation occurs gradually and varies depending on the environment and architecture, ranging from light silver to almost black. Over time, the surface may become rougher and develop small cracks, making it more susceptible to surface mould.

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR BATTEN COATING

As there is no resin or pitch left in thermowood, all coating materials will adhere better to its clean, resin-free surface. Any wood finish can be used, except linseed oil. Semi-transparent oil with pigment protects the thermowood from UV radiation and provides the desired colour.

The most used oil provides an original caramel colour or a shade close to that of naturally weathered thermowood. This is a very practical solution, as the oil pigments wear off fairly quickly and the exposed wood begins to grey. However, the overall appearance of grey-coated thermowood remains aesthetically pleasing.

You can also opt for a fully covering paint. It is important that the coating allows the wood to ‘breathe’ and lets water evaporate.

You can paint the planks yourself before installation. If you plan to join them end-to-end, apply the coating to the ends of the boards. This will seal the cut wood fibres and prevent them from absorbing water, which would cause the ends of the boards to darken. The surface of the boards must be dry and clean when coating. Always follow the coating product manufacturer’s instructions when painting and maintaining the planks.

Brolis Timber thermowood planks can be industrially coated to ensure a high-quality, technologically correct final result. During production, we use either the semi-transparent Tikkurila Wood Stain stain or the fully covering Tikkurila Ultra Pro 10 paint.

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR BATTEN MAINTENANCE

UNCOATED:

The surface of uncoated thermowood ages naturally and does not require special maintenance. However, if necessary, you can wash the facade with an alkaline outdoor wood cleaner and rinse it with water* to remove surface mould and dirt.

GREY-COATED:

The maintenance of grey-coated thermowood planks is basically the same as the maintenance recommendations for uncoated wood.

COATED:

Renew the surface as needed – weathering will vary significantly depending on the pigmentation of the coating material used and surface exposure to UV rays and other climatic conditions. The more pigment the product contains, the longer the finish will last. Tikkurila stain last 3–8 years, while fully covering paint serves 15+ years.

The facade does not need to be sanded; simply wash* it with an alkaline outdoor wood cleaner, rinse with water and reapply the stain or fully covering paint.

*Thermowood products should not be cleaned with high-pressure washers, as this can damage the surface and cause splintering.
